Which franchise teams need to select a center in the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft?

This past season, there were numerous NBA teams that were in need of a solid center to make things easier. We obviously watched the Houston Rockets struggle in the postseason due to no strong Center in the middle.

The big man position has always been a needed presence for teams. Without a strong five-man, there’s no true enforcer that can protect the middle and dominate the boards. This year’s NBA Draft is filled with talented big men that could potentially make a difference with whichever organization chooses them. Let’s take a look at which teams are in desperate need of a Center next season.

1. Golden State Warriors

The Warriors are seeking a redemption season after finishing with a brutal 15-50 record the year before. The franchise has a chance to draft James Wiseman at the #2 overall pick in November.
Wiseman will help the team tremendously under the basket. The Warriors were ranked 25th in rebounds and 19th in blocked shots a season ago.

With Wiseman’s versatility on both ends of the floor, he can fill that void of protecting the rim and crashing the glass for Golden State. Drafting a solid big man can do wonders for this team moving forward.

2. Chicago Bulls

The Bulls have the 4th pick in this year’s NBA Draft. The team is filled with talented youth who can make a difference in the NBA one day. In order for the team to get to the next level, adding an active center in the draft should be a priority for the team.

At times, the team was brutal on defense. They allowed 49.6 points in the paint to their opponents and it at times killed them late in games. The team could have a shot at landing Onyeka Okongwu with their draft pick. Okongwu may be small compared to other bigs but his tenacity and attention to detail make up for it. The Bulls could go in that direction if they grab a center in this year’s draft.

3. New Orleans Pelicans

The Pelicans have the 13th pick in this year’s draft with a bright future ahead of them. If they can bring in a talented big man in the draft, it could do wonders for their team.

The Pelicans having a dominant center can make things comfortable for Zion Williamson to play the power forward position more. It can also improve their opponents’ points in the paint as they gave up 52 points this season under the basket. The Pelicans have a shot at grabbing a big man in Vernon Carey and Jalen Smith. Adding a dominant center can make things easier for the rest of the players on the Pelicans.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers should go in a new direction of having a big man. In his short stint playing for the organization, Andre Drummond did not exceed expectations. Cleveland was amongst one of the poorest defensive teams in the NBA as teams had open lanes to the basket. It’s time that they draft a solid center who can be an anchor under the rim.

Someone who is passionate about getting a stop on that end of the floor can change the dynamic of how this team plays. As the Cavs gear up for their 5th pick in the draft, adding a solid center should be a priority.

5. Boston Celtics

As the Celtics have the 14th pick in this year’s draft, it would be great if they can use it on a solid center they can truly develop.

It seems as if the franchise is not looking long term with Tacko Fall. As much enthusiasm as the kid shows, it’s only wonders whether he will be apart of the Celtics future or not.

This is an opportunity for Danny Ainge and the Celtics front office to look at the options that are in front of them and see what they can do. They have shown in the past to have a lackluster defense under the basket by allowing open lanes and offensive rebounds. It would be great if Boston found a Center who can control the paint on both ends of the floor.

There are many terrific centers in this year’s draft from Wiseman, Vernon Carey, and much more. They all made a huge impact under the basket which often resulted in team success in their past seasons. Whichever team the players land to in the draft, we can only hope that they will grow and blossom into the players they are expected to become.
