NBA Draft 2020: Best-case scenarios for all 30 franchises
Portland Trailblazers – Land either Jaden McDaniels or Saddiq Bey
The comeback in the bubble to make it to the playoffs was a “feel good” story but masked what was an injury-filled and downright disappointing regular season. They had so many issues at small/power forward that they signed free agent Carmelo Anthony. He was good overall but obviously isn’t the long-term answer. Zach Collins might not be either if he doesn’t improve next season.
At No. 16, the Trailblazers need to find a quality combo forward that can play on both ends. Patrick Williams could be around but not necessarily the best fit. Bey from Villanova is a more natural fit and has a high ceiling overall thanks to his shooting ability. McDaniels would be if the franchise simply isn’t sold on Collins and wants to add more competition.
Sacramento Kings – Take Precious Achiuwa in first round
Between the Buddy Heild rumors and Bogdan Bogdanovic being a pending free agent, taking a guard at No. 12 wouldn’t be crazy. But a clear need the Kings have to address right now is in the frontcourt, particularly at power forward/center. Marvin Bagley was hurt this past season but there are genuine long-term questions about whether he can be a star. The other centers, Richaun Holmes and Dwayne Dedmon are barely rotational pieces.
The ideal selection at 12 would be Achiuwa, the AAC Player of the Year who averaged a double-double as a freshman at Memphis. He would help Sacramento on the boards and at the defensive end and could play with Bagley in the frontcourt. How his offense translates to the NBA is still a question but the Kings don’t need to swing for the fences. They just need a solid rotational role player that can contribute to the win column.
