NBA Draft 2020: Best-case scenarios for all 30 franchises
Houston Rockets – Score on a couple of undrafted free agents
Due to many past trades, the Rockets are without any ways to improve themselves in this year’s draft. And with a new head coach and likely system change, this is a bad time to not have any draft picks. The one saving grace for the franchise is that with the new-look combine coming up, the odds of players falling through the cracks and not getting drafted are much higher than usual.
Whoever the new head coach is, they’ll need to stockpile big men. One player they should target is Killian Tillier out of Gonzaga, a 6’10 stretch forward who can defend. Baylor’s Freddie Gillespie has been underestimated before excelling, while EJ Montgomery of Kentucky has potential as well. Along with bigs, scoring guards such as Jordan Ford (Saint Mary’s), Jalen Harris (Nevada), and Ty-Shon Alexander (Creighton), would be complementary pieces to improve Houston’s bench as well.
Indiana Pacers – Land a rebounding machine late in the second round
Since the Pacers gave their first-round pick to Milwaukee in the Malcolm Brogdon trade last year, they don’t have one this time around. They can focus on replacing head coach Nate McMillan, before picking someone with the 54th pick in the draft.
The biggest need is more frontcourt help alongside Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner. Recent first-round picks Goga Bitadze and TJ Leaf haven’t been part of the rotation, and Indiana themselves were one of the worst rebounding teams in the league this season. Even with a late pick, the Pacers can till land a potential hidden gem, including Yoeli Childs (BYU), Udoka Azubuike (Kansas), and Mamadi Diakite (Virginia).
