NBA Draft 2020: Best-case scenarios for all 30 franchises
Memphis Grizzlies – Take Cassius Winston at No. 40
As mentioned before, the Grizzlies have an exciting young core for the next 10+ years that should be a mainstay in the Western Conference. With plenty of cap room for 2021, they can be a team that lands a star to fill in at shooting guard, arguably their biggest weakness on the roster. So this pick should be someone who adds value in any way, even if it isn’t on the court.
I would argue that the best pure leader in the draft is Winston from Michigan State, an All-American and former Big Ten Player of the Year who is an all-time assist producer and great shot-maker. He can be a great backup for Morant at the least and can be a positive teammate for the culture the franchise is trying to develop.
Miami Heat – Draft Daniel Oturu
Whether or not they beat the Lakers in the finals, the Heat has the pieces to win both now and in the future. There are very few weaknesses on the roster that needs to be addressed, regardless of what some pending free agents decided to do. Far as depth goes, a potential move would be to add a center as a backup to Bam Adebayo for future battles against the top bigs in the east.
At either 29 or 30, one option will be Daniel Oturu, an All-Big Ten center that averaged around 20 and 10 as a sophomore. At worst, he’s a big body that can soak up minutes. But if he can develop an offensive game that can translate to the pros, Miami can get another steal in the draft.
