ACC Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2020-21 season
For the first time in school history, Florida State won the ACC Regular Season title during the 2019-20 season. Unfortunately for the Seminoles, they weren’t able to win their first ACC Tournament title since 2012, but they were *technically* awarded with the title.
Because COVID-19 canceled the ACC Tournament, the Seminoles technically won the 2020 ACC Tournament due to the fact that they won the regular-season title.
Now, they will be tasked with following up their best season in quite some time, and they’ll have to do it without three of their top-four scorers as Devin Vassell, Trent Forrest, and Patrick Williams all departed Tallahassee for the NBA Draft.
The good news for Florida State is that they added an incredibly talented freshman in Scottie Barnes who is ranked seventh in the Class of 2020 by 247 Sports.
Alongside M.J. Walker who was FSU’s third-leading scorer, Barnes will be tasked with taking over a Seminole team fresh off one of the best seasons in program history.
Here is what Florida State’s 2020-21 roster will look like:
- Scottie Barnes, Freshman, Guard
- Quincy Ballard, Freshman, Center
- Basla Koprivica, Sophomore, Center
- Cleveland Yates, Sophomore, Guard
- Sardaar Calhoun, Junior, Guard
- Raiquan Gary, Redshirt Junior, Forward
- Malik Osborne, Redshirt Junior, Forward
- Anthony Polite, Redshirt Junior, Guard
- Wyatt Wilkes, Redshirt Junior, Guard
- Rayquan Evans, Senior, Guard
- Nathanael Jack, Senior, Guard
- M.J. Walker, Senior, Guard
- Tanor Ngom, Senior, Center
- Justin Lindner, Redshirt Senior, Guard
- Travis Light, Redshirt Senior, Guard
- Harrison Prieto, Redshirt Senior, Forward
- Will Miles, Redshirt Senior, Guard
The good news for Florida State is that although they lost so many key players from their 2019-20 team, they still have 12 upperclassmen with eight of them being seniors.
The question is; which of those 12 upperclassmen will be able to step up this season and take over the roles left behind by Vassell, Forrest, and Williams? My immediate guesses are Scottie Barnes, M.J. Walker, and Malik Osborne.
Walker and Osborne finished third and fifth respectively in scoring last season, and Barnes will be one of the most talented freshmen, not only in the ACC but in College Basketball as a whole. That being said, I would fully expect Barnes to be a key factor for the Seminoles next season.
Whether or not Florida State can win their second consecutive, and second-ever ACC Regular Season Title remains to be seen, but there is a good chance they will at least finish among the top-five.
