Patriot League Basketball: In-depth look at Boston University guard Walter Whyte
By Bryan Mauro
Boston U was headed back to the NCAA tournament a season ago before the pandemic hit. They hope to win the league again on the back of Walter Whyte.
The Patriot League always seems to have one really strong team and a handful of others that are competitive. The league has teams that can give many power schools a game and the schools have won games against other power schools in the NCAA tournament.
Bucknell is the team from this league that fans are likely to recognize especially since Bucknell has the biggest win in the Patriot League when the 2004 NCAA tournament team upset Kansas in the first round. The 2005 team also beat Arkansas as a 9 seed in the first round of the NCAA tournament as well. The Bison have had the most success out of anyone in the league but the league as a whole has performed amicably when on a national stage.
The newest team the Boston University Terriers had some success in the late ’90s and early 2000s as a member of the America East Conference. Since Boston had been a member of the Patriot League, which is an upgrade in competition, the Terriers have not qualified for a tournament that was played. Boston University did qualify for the NCAA tournament this past season as was looking forward to their first tournament appearance since 2011.
This season should be another great season for the Terriers as they have a good portion of their roster returning from the Patriot League championship team. Boston University did lose their leading scorer in Max Mahoney, but they have another star who is ready for a breakout.
Junior guard Walter Whyte is ready to take the reigns of the Terrier offense and lead his team to another NCAA tournament, which would be the second one they have qualified for in two seasons but only the first one that a game has played for Boston University.
