NCAA Basketball: LSU, Michigan, and Nebraska among finalists for Bryce McGowens
LSU Tigers
Although not as impressive as Florida State’s class, the Tigers have done a good job this Summer as well. They landed top-50 center Jerrell Colbert, along with three-star shooting guard Brandon Murray and most recently, top-50 wing Alex Fudge. They have the 11th best class and could be in the top-5 if they land McGowens.
Compared to Georgia, LSU is in much better shape in terms of competing for an NCAA Tournament bid. With Javonte Smart, Trendon Watford, Darius Days, and five-star shooting guard freshman Cameron Thomas, this team should be in the top-5 range for the SEC this upcoming season.
They still would have a need for McGowens, particularly if Thomas goes pro after one season and Watford leaves as well. That would create a need for scoring for the 2021-22 season without question.
The obvious concern with this program is their ongoing investigations with the NCAA regarding alleged recruiting misconduct. The NCAA seems confident they have enough to potentially drop the hammer, similarly in the way that Oklahoma State got punished this offseason; losing multiple scholarships and banned from the 2020 postseason tournaments.
If anything were to happen to the Tigers, it would happen for the season after. If they get banned as well, that would be tough for any seniors or “one and done” freshmen on the roster. That may include McGowens but he’ll likely stick around for more than one year but this is a negative recruiting pitch that the others are probably making right now.
