NCAA Basketball: LSU, Michigan, and Nebraska among finalists for Bryce McGowens
Nebraska Cornhuskers
It doesn’t make much sense for a rebuilding program that won just seven total games last season would be considered a potential favorite to land a five-star prospect. However, Nebraska has a trump card that could win McGowens over.
Earlier this offseason, Pittsburgh sophomore Trey McGowens elected to transfer. And he decided to play for Fred Hoiberg and the Cornhuskers. A big reason had to do with the potential playing time he’d get as a lead ball-handler, something he couldn’t do with the Panthers.
Now at Nebraska, with a waiver to play this upcoming season, Trey is looking to help get his brother Bryce to pick their team. Family reasons are why Georgia is on the list, so why not add the Cornhuskers?
What they have to offer besides playing with the brother is a clear go-to role out the gate. Western Illinois grad transfer Kobe Webster will be gone after this year and those left in the rotation (Dalano Banton, Elijah Wood, and Trey McGowens), aren’t the kind of scorers that the five-star guard is.
The roster is slowly building into one that can compete more in the Big Ten. Sophomore forward Yvan Ouedraogo has long-term promise, and the team has top-100 center recruit Wilhelm Breidenbach part of the 2021 class. A year from now, Nebraska could land even more talent to surround McGowens but it’s going to take a lot more to get out of the conference basement, let alone try and make the NCAA Tournament in the near future.
It would be a huge shift from Florida State to Nebraska, but when family is involved, you can’t be too surprised. Landing the other McGowens would be a major win for the Cornhuskers and their recruiting efforts but don’t count out the Seminoles just yet in this. Very well could come down to these two programs.
