Summit League Basketball: In-depth look at South Dakota State star Douglas Wilson
By Bryan Mauro
South Dakota State Basketball has been the class of the Summit League over the last decade. They are going to continue that dominance led by the reigning Player of the Year in Douglas Wilson.
The nine schools that make up the Summit League all call their home in the great Midwest. The conference has schools that span from Illinois to Nebraska and those schools all play a tough hard-nosed brand of basketball associated with that area. The Summit League is no slouch when it comes to basketball though. The league is the home to some of the best young coaches in the game.
Summit League teams are all located in areas when they are going to have to compete against the power schools for talent and yet the Summit League has had some of the better talent in the country. South Dakota State had one of the best college basketball players in the history of the game in Mike Daum. Daum was from a small town in Nebraska and was extremely underrecruited due to a lack of exposure in high school. Once he went to South Dakota State the rest was history.
South Dakota State has been a Division 1 team for 15 years, has been in the Summit League since 2008-2009. Since then the Jackrabbits have finished at the top or near the top 8 out of the 12 years and have been the Summit League representative in the NCAA tournament five times.
The program has been dominant within the league and this year doesn’t appear to be any different as second-year head coach Eric Henderson has a great team all anchored by the reigning Player of the Year in the league in Douglas Wilson.
Wilson enters his senior year as the best player in the Summit League and he is also the leader of the best team in the Summit. Will this be the year the Jackrabbits finally get their first win in the NCAA tournament.
