Summit League Basketball: In-depth look at South Dakota State star Douglas Wilson

Expectations for Douglas Wilson in 2020-21
South Dakota State is going to finish on top of the league again, and it would be a giant surprise if they didn’t make the NCAA tournament again this year. At this point in their Division 1 tenure, these are the general expectations for the Jackrabbits every year.
Their fans have grown to expect and support a winner and anything less than that is a shock. Coach Henderson has an experienced roster this season and returns all five starters and adds some high-quality JUCO players and transfers. South Dakota State is going to be a force in the Summit this season.
Wilson is likely going to exceed whatever expectations are given to him by the media and the coaching staff. He is likely going to average somewhere close to 20 points per game, have somewhere in the ballpark of 6-9 rebounds per game, and shoot over 60% from the floor.
If he does all of those things his second consecutive player of the year award will be wrapped up. On a national level expect to see his name mentioned as a finalist for the Newell award for the best big man in college basketball.
The senior is efficient enough and should have a usage rate for the Jackrabbits that will enable the senior to have an outside chance to win the NCAA scoring title. The gap between Wilson and the second-best player in the league is a large one and it is growing by the day.
As mentioned the Jackrabbits have all five starters back, what they also have is virtually all of their bench returning. They are built to score points this season. Wilson does all of his work in the low block and provides a luxury that many teams don’t have and that is a post player of that caliber.
South Dakota State also loves to shoot threes and have some players on their roster who do that very well. David Wingett, Alex Arians, and Noah Friedel are going to shoot a ton of threes and make most of the ones they take.
The offense averaged almost 80 points per game last year and it could quite possibly be better this year. South Dakota State will be as advertised and is a dangerous team coming out of the Summit.
