Maryland basketball: Jairus Hamilton will make a big difference for Terps

Jairus Hamilton and Maryland basketball got the news they’d been hoping for.

Well, it’s about time. Jairus Hamilton learned the news Tuesday evening that he is eligible to play for the 2020-21 season. The 6-foot-8, 234-pound transfer from Boston College averaged 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 25.7 minutes per game last season.

According to the report on the Maryland Athletics website, Hamilton appreciates the NCAA and Maryland basketball for their efforts, is proud to be a Terp, and is looking forward to finishing his career in College Park.

You never get tired of hearing stories where players get surprised with scholarships and the team celebrates. Head Coach Mark Turgeon was proud to share this moment with Hamilton and the team.

“Nothing made me happier than to deliver this news to Jairus and our team at practice today,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “Jairus remained positive throughout the entire process and we are thrilled for him. I am extremely thankful to the NCAA for diligently working with our administration, compliance staff, and Jairus’ family to see this through.”

The addition of Jairus Hamilton plays to the Terps’ strengths

The Terps have always run the fastbreak and rebounded the ball well. They ranked sixth in the Big Ten in that category (38.3 per game offensively, 34.3 defensively). They ranked fourth in field goal percentage defense with .399 percent. He makes plays on both ends of the floor and Terps fans should look forward to watching him make plenty of them.

Hamilton plays to their strength of pushing the ball down the floor as soon as they get a defensive rebound. If you recall, Anthony Cowan Jr. and Aaron Wiggins did that at a high level also. can get out and run on the fastbreak to score or assist. He attacks the glass with authority and is good at moving off the ball in the half-court.

Now that he is eligible, the Terps have he, Chol Marial, Donta Scott, Galin Smith, and Arnaud Revaz in the frontcourt. Hamilton will give the Terps more flexibility with their lineup and what they can do offensively.
