Expectations for Mattias Markusson in 2020-21

Loyola Marymount is not going to be a favorite to win the league and if they make the NCAA tournament this year it would be a huge surprise given how top-heavy this league is with Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, and BYU.

However, it would be reasonable to think with a full deck like the Lions will have this year, that they can finish in fourth place. Given the way the year played out a season ago that would be a huge accomplishment for the Loyola Marymount program.

The Swedish big man is going to be back and committed to his program, and he is going to remind the rest of the conference that he is still a member of the conference and don’t forget about him. His defensive presence alone should give him some consideration for the all-defensive team.

He is likely going to set records at Loyola Marymount in regard to shooting percentage that will not likely ever be broken. First-team all-conference is going to be a tough ask considering the overall level of talent on the opposing rosters but Markusson is capable.

This article very well could have been written about another player for the Lions who is also entering his senior year. Eli Scott, who is going to have his own section in the Lions record book when he leaves school. The Lions are in good hands with Scott and Markusson on the floor together. The last time that happened the team won 22 games which is the third-highest total ever.

The Lions have a lot of experience coming back and while they may not finish in the top three of the conference, they very well could knock off one of those top teams especially at home. Making the race for the top spot very interesting. The Lions have the pieces to have a much better team this season.
