Texas Tech’s recent success against Texas

Success can be determined in a multitude of different ways. Based on what the past has brought, but also the standard for the fanbase. The easy part for Chris Beard was that there weren’t high expectations when he walked into the program.

Since the beginning of the decade prior to Beard, Texas absolutely dominated this series. From 2010-2016, Texas Tech just won two out of the 15 games that the two played. However, the Red Raiders are 5-1 against Texas, with Texas getting the upper hand the last time they met in Lubbock, 68-58.

Suburb shooting and a 22 point effort from Andrew Jones was the reason why the Longhorns escaped Lubbock with a win. Bad shooting from Tech and being out-rebounded was what ended up being their downfall in that game. However, winning this many games isn’t just a coincidence, it’s turning into a trend.

A direction where Texas Tech is winning in the coaching aspect as Tech players are highly rated recruits. Not only that, but they are being coached well and Beard is getting them to their full potential.

The ability to able to coach and develop players is the most critical part of running a consistently successful program. Teams can get four five-stars and make them look stacked on paper. When that doesn’t turn into wins, then there’s an issue. I believe Beard has the advantage in this case, as he has proven he can win, back to his one year stint at Arkansas Little-Rock.
