What are the expectations for Houston Basketball this upcoming season?

When Kelvin Sampson’s squad tips off on Nov. 25, 2020, versus the Southland Conference’s Lamar, it will mark more than just the start of the most unique NCAA Men’s Basketball Season. It will also be the start of Coach Sampson’s quest of leading Houston Basketball to its sixth consecutive season with a winning record in the AAC.

He will also be seeking to finish the season in the AP Top-25 Poll for the fourth consecutive season, two of those years they grabbed at least a piece of the AAC title.

When the 2019-20 season came to a conclusion prior to the Cougars playing any games in the conference tournament, Houston Basketball had no players in the top 10 of scoring but could lay claim to the No.4 rebounder and All-AAC Second Team selection Nate Hinton. As well as the No. 8 assists man in DeJon Jarreau.

Joining Hinton on the All-AAC Second Team was Caleb Mills who will be returning after his freshman season. Point guard Marcus Sasser was also a member of the All-AAC Team and will be returning as well.

The Cougars will be welcoming the conference’s second highest-ranked freshman class, all of whom will be looked upon to contribute off the bench this season while keeping an eye on the future of Houston Cougars’ Basketball. As the only AAC team ranked in the AP Poll Top-25, the Cougars will no doubt be setting the pace and be the team to chase throughout the season.
