Mount St. Mary’s vs. Maryland: 2020-21 college basketball game preview, TV schedule
Maryland basketball has a lot of momentum coming into another matchup with Mount St. Mary’s.
TV Schedule: Sunday, November 29th, 2 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network
Where: Xfinity Center in College Park, MD
Mount St. Mary’s has a lot of incentive to beat Maryland basketball Sunday. The Mountaineers are looking for their first win against the Terps. Even without an NBA backcourt of Bruno Fernando and Jalen Smith, the Terps are still strong. The Mountaineers will still have their work cut out for them.
A 62-55 win against the Morgan State Bears has given the Mountaineers momentum of their own. Jalen Gibbs, Damian Chong Qui, and Malik Jefferson combined for 44 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers to victory. These are players that the Terps will need to contain.
The Terps 2-2-1 zone press is what the Mountaineers are going to have to deal with. It was effective against the Navy Midshipmen because it forced them to become a one-dimensional three-point shooting team. Eric Ayala, Darryl Morsell, and Aaron Wiggins had another solid outing and combined for 44 points, assists, and eight rebounds.
The basket was wide open for the Terps during the game Friday. They finished with a 68.2 percent field goal percentage. Let’s think about that. When you shoot that well from the field, that means you’re getting good shots in close and in the midrange. Even when they shot from the perimeter, the shots that fell were set up with pinpoint passing to open spots.
In the last meeting between these two teams, the Terps won the game in the paint (56-22) and second-chance points (25-6). The game is going to be determined in these areas. For the Mountaineers to win, they have to break the press early and often to convert on their opportunities.
Defensively, they will have to lock down the passing lanes so that the Terps can’t move the ball. As we’ve seen in the past, the Terps aren’t as effective when the ball stands still.
