Not all big games come from NCAA Basketball stars such as Iowa’s Luka Garza. Which players are responsible for the most random 40-point games?

On November 27, Iowa’s Luka Garza became NCAA Basketball’s first 40-point scorer, dropping 41 in a blowout over Southern (he had 36 in the first half!!!). Even for stars with Garza’s credentials, performances like this are rare at the collegiate level.

Among thousands of games played by Division 1 teams last season, only 34 involved a player scoring 40+ points.  Usually, these performances come from players like Luka Garza: The teams’ leading scorers. The go-to guys. The ballers who must take 30 shots to give their team the best chance of winning.

On an even rarer occasion, it’s the unexpected player who catches fire and starts breaking records. Whether it’s the new transfer who hasn’t proven himself yet or the defensive specialist that the defense doesn’t respect enough, sometimes the unlikely heroes add randomness to these high-scoring moments.

These are NCAA Basketball’s five most random 40-point scorers in the last 10 years.
