Richmond Basketball: 3 takeaways from away upset victory over Kentucky
#2: Team scoring throughout
Although the bench only scored ten points, the Spiders displayed scoring throughout. Richmond attacked offensively and did more under the rim than Kentucky. We saw this especially in the second half as the Spiders outscored Kentucky in the second half by 16 points. They began pulling away with 12 minutes left and maintained a lead and this is due to their ability to score.
The Spiders took advantage of a young Kentucky team that is very inexperienced. Although Kentucky is ranked top 10 among all other programs, they still have a lot of work to do. Calipari is working with new players as they had to replace players like Tyrese Maxey, Immanuel Quickley, and Nik Richards.
A significant reason as to why Richmond is so good at finding ways to score points is because they drive to the net and cut to the basket. They use their height and strength to post up for points in the paint and have great range from three. There are not many teams who have big men who cant shoot from three but, Richmond does.
If the Spiders can get their big men battling for every rebound and forcing turnovers to allow for points, they may be one of the best teams in college basketball by the end of the season. The Spiders forced the Wildcats to turn the ball over 21 times.
If Richmond can handle Kentucky, they should have no problem scoring on Dec. 13 when they face No.15 West Virginia and on Dec. 16 against another SEC foe in Vanderbilt.
