The BIG EAST-BIG 12 matchup between St. John’s Basketball and Texas Tech has been canceled due to Concerns Related to COVID-19

St. John’s University announced Monday afternoon that it has decided to not travel its men’s basketball program to Lubbock, Texas for its Thursday contest against Texas Tech due to health risks related to COVID-19.

The University has clearly prioritized the health and wellness of its student-athletes, coaches, and staff members with this announcement. The news of the cancelation was made public just hours removed from Towson announcing its game with Maryland on Tuesday has been canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test within its staff.

Thursday’s contest with the Red Raiders was scheduled to be part of the inaugural BIG EAST-BIG 12 Battle competition.

St. John’s University has released the following statement regarding its decision to cancel the team’s travel to Texas:

"“St. John’s top priority is to best ensure ways to minimize risks associated with this global pandemic for both our University community and public health. The University’s COVID-19 management team in consultation with local health experts came to this decision. In the end and with profound disappointment, the gravity of the concerns outweighed the excitement and opportunity to play this game.”"

St. John’s Athletic Director Mike Cragg agreed with the University’s decision stating:

"“The decisions made by St. John’s since the outset of the pandemic have resulted in creating one of the safest and healthiest college environments in the country this past Fall. Our student-athletes and staff remain excited and we will continue forward.”"

St. John’s also announced on Monday that its program has added a game with BYU on Wednesday as part of the Roman Legends Classic in “Bubbleville” from the Mohegan Sun Arena. Tip-off between the Red Storm and the Cougars is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN 2.
