After a hot first half by St. John’s Basketball, Boston College clawed its way back late but the Johnnies prevailed with a four-point victory.

St. John’s Basketball came into the 2020-21 season searching for its identity. The Red Storm – a unit that features eight transfers and newcomers – have played three completely different games, yet stand unscathed at 3-0.

The Red Storm proved that they are a deep, versatile team that can run up and down the court with the best of the BIG EAST this season. In their first two contests, Head Coach Mike Anderson and his squad showcased the potential impact of newcomers such as Vince Cole, Posh Alexander, and Isaih Moore.

Sophomore forward Julian Champagnie made his 2020-21 debut and took Bubbleville by storm, giving St. John’s fans more to be excited about.

As a team, the Red Storm had a tale of two different halves. Although the Johnnies shot 52% from the field for the game – including a 56% field goal percentage in the first half –  St. John’s committed 10 of its 15 turnovers in the second half and allowed Boston College to trim its deficit from 20 points to three with just over a minute left to play.

Despite finishing the contest without a field goal over the last 2:39, the Red Storm were able to claim its third win of the season over the former BIG EAST foe, 97-93.

Champagnie led all scorers with 29 points and 10 rebounds in his season debut. BC guard Wynston Tabbs led the Golden Eagles with 23 points. Greg Williams Jr. also had one of the best games of his collegiate career,

The Red Storm were able to take advantage of the glass, corralling 37 rebounds to Boston College’s 31. The Red Storm also won the turnover margin in its third straight game, forcing the Golden Eagles to turn the ball over 19 times while only committing 15 of their own.

Tonight’s win over the Golden Eagles ends a seven-game losing streak, beating the former BIG EAST squad for the first time since February 18, 2001. With that, here are three takeaways from the Johnnies’ victory over Boston College.
