#2: Johnnies’ Flounder in the 2nd Half

The Red Storm picked up right where they left off to start the second half. After trading baskets with the Golden Eagles in the first three minutes of the half, the Johnnies exploded for an 18-6 scoring run over the next four minutes of the game to take a 75-55 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the contest.

Just as St. John’s was starting to run away with its third win of the season, Boston College made the next six baskets to trim its deficit to six points at 75-69 with 10 minutes remaining.

Champagnie and Dylan Addae-Wusu combined for seven unanswered points to catapult the Johnnies’ lead back to 13 points. The Red Storm and the Golden Eagles traded baskets keeping St. John’s lead in double digits down the stretch.

With St. John’s up 92-79 with 2:36 left to play, Makai Ashton-LangfordWynston Tabbs, Rich Kelly and would score quick fastbreak points to cut the deficit. Tabbs would follow with a triple of his own and a Jay Heath layup quickly turned the once-blowout to a one-possession game with 70 seconds remaining.

St. John’s would make critical free throws in the final seconds and a critical block by Champagnie would seal the victory for the Johnnies in Bubbleville.

The Red Storm allowed Boston College to get back into the game due to its carelessness with the basketball and getting into foul trouble early (15 fouls). St. John’s would commit 10 of its 15 turnovers in the second half and would miss critical scoring chances, including a Posh Alexander botched fastbreak dunk attempt.
