Marquette Basketball: Takeaways from upset win over No. 4 Wisconsin
Big men bolster Golden eagles postseason hopes
John Lewis proved a lot tonight. Not only is he the hero of the night, tipping in the winning bucket and was the highest scorer for Marquette. He proved that can guard just about anybody. Lewis, a 6’7 forward, was forced with the task of guarding both 6’10 Potter and 6’11 Reuvers with Theo John in foul trouble.
Potter is a very good back-to-the-basket scorer, yet he struggled greatly to get something going against Lewis and John. Theo John is a staple in the defensive prowess for Marquette, but if Lewis and Garcia can help with the defense down low as they did today, this becomes a different beast.
Freshman Dawson Garcia had a colder day offensively, but provided immense value defensively and picked up eight rebounds. This new brand of physicality is shown through Garcia as he has a terrific knack of getting to the bucket. Garcia also snagged a steal, which was one of ten Wisconsin turnovers.
The Badgers are known for their dedication to taking care of the basketball, something Marquette was not known for a year ago. They had a -2.7 turnover margin, which slotted them at 333rd in the nation. That is something Wojciechowski was clear must change this season, and they showed improvement in this one.
6’7 senior Jamal Cain also added ten points while notching a few key stops down the stretch. The frontcourt defense seems to be bolstered from last season, which was a problem at times. They lost Brendan Bailey, but others seem to be stepping up.
This was one of the main question marks of the year, and the call was answered in this one.
