How does the WCC Basketball look so far in the 2020-21 season?

The WCC Basketball season has got off to a start. The league was supposed to have three teams in the NCAA tournament last year before the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled it. Let’s take a look at the early season power rankings.

1. Gonzaga

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the number one team in our WCC Power Rankings. Gonzaga is the No. 1 team in the country and has the No. 1 adjusted offense in the country according to Kenpom.

The Bulldogs are 3-0 and led by leading scorers Drew Timme (23.3 PPG) and Corey Kispert (22.3)PPG. But they are led by a balanced attack with Joel Ayayi (13.7 PPG), Jalen Suggs (13.3 PPG), and Andrew Nembhard (11.7 PPG).

2. BYU

BYU who ended last season as a top 20 team was picked 2nd in the WCC preseason media poll and is off to a 5-1 start. The Cougars lost Jake Toolson, TJ Haws, and Yoeli Childs. They look to replace some of the load with Matt Haarms and Brandon Averette. Alex Barcello is the Cougars leading scorer at 18.4 PPG.

3. Saint Mary’s

Saint Mary’s has started off the season 4-1 and as an impressive victory over Northern Iowa. The Gals lost a lot from last year’s team including leading scorers Jordan Ford and Malik Fitts. But Tommy Kuhse has returned and is so far making a huge impact (11.6 PPG, 7.8 APG).

Alex Ducas has greatly improved going from 3.6 PPG to 13.0. For the Gals to finish near the top of the league they need supporting players such as Matthias Tass to have a big season.

4. San Francisco

After losing its first game against UMass Lowell, San Francisco has won 3 out of 4 including defeating number 3 Virginia 61-60. The Dons have three players in double figures with Khalil Shabazz and Jamaree Bouyea leading the team in scoring with (17.4).

The Dons are going to continue to shoot well. In their three victories, San Francisco has shot 43% while in their two losses they have shot 23%.
