The Arizona State Sun Devils have played up to their top 25 ranking in the early part of the season. Bobby Hurley’s team is coming off a (70-62) win over Cal. Remy Martin and Josh Christopher scored a combined 36 points and shot 14 for 23 from the field. The Sun Devils also forced 20 Cal turnovers. To win at San Diego State, Martin and Christopher must continue to play well.
Sun Devils star Freshman Marcus Bagley (13.0 PPG,5.8 RPG) left the Cal game with a mild calf injury but according to Jon Rothstein, “there is a good chance he will play Sunday”. Bagley, a good athlete who has shown the ability to shoot will be important to get back if Arizona State wants to pull out the road victory.
Getting Alonzo Verge back would be huge for the Sun Devils as well. Verge, who missed the Cal game because of Covid-19 contact tracing is back at practice. He’s a quality scorer (15.0 PPG) that should really help ASU when he gets back in the lineup.
San Diego State is coming off a victory against Pepperdine (65-60) to improve to 4-0 on the year. The Aztecs are led by a balanced attack with 10 players playing double-digit minutes. Jordan Schackel is the Aztecs leading scorer with (12.8 PPG).
Another key player is senior Matt Mitchell, Mitchell (12.3ppg) was the 2nd leading scorer on the team last year. He’s known as a good finisher around the rim and jump shooter. He will need to play well for San Diego State to pull out the victory.
San Diego State does a remarkable job forcing turnovers. According to Kenpom, the Aztecs force the 11th highest amount of turnovers per possession in the country. Arizona State’s ability to take care of the ball will be a huge factor in this game.
Arizona State and San Diego State come into the game with a top 25 matchup. Both teams have been pretty solid this year and feature lots of quality players. However, Arizona State has the talent advantage and they should pull out the victory.
