UCLA Basketball got a nice victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles. Here’s a view of what the game meant for the Bruins.

UCLA Basketball picked up a 69-60 win over a tough Marquette team on Friday night. Mick Cronin’s squad came into the game featuring a very balanced offense where seven separate players average over 8.0 points per game. The ability to spread out the scoring has helped the Bruins as of late.

Much of the same happened today, with their leading scorers being Jaime Jaquez Jr. (18) and Jules Bernard (15). Bernard came in off the bench in this one, as Johnny Juzang received his first start in a UCLA uniform.

Marquette started out hot in this one, making four quick buckets to jump out to a 10-4 lead. After scoring ten points in the first three minutes, the Golden Eagles were held to just 50 points in the final 37 minutes of the game. UCLA’s stingy defense forced 18 turnovers, which the Bruins manufactured into 17 points.

For UCLA, Tyger Campbell scored just four points (2-3 from the floor) but added nine assists and just two turnovers. Campbell continues a very efficient Assist-to-Turnover ratio that is higher than 4:1. Jalen Hill and Cody Riley, the big men down low for the Bruins, were held to just a combined ten points. Largely due to the excellent defensive presence of Theo John manning the middle, UCLA was unable to get a whole lot going in back-to-the-basket situations.

Offensively for Marquette, Ohio State transfer D.J. Carton led the way again, going 7-13 for 18 points. The other main offensive cogs were largely ineffective for Steve Wojciechowski.  Senior center Theo John was held scoreless on just 0-2 shooting. Dawson Garcia, the highly-touted freshman out of Minnesota, couldn’t seem to get things rolling at any point in this one. Garcia went just 3-12 from the floor and failed to hit a three-pointer on four attempts.

The Bruins won a hard-fought contest against a really solid Marquette team. There’s a lot of things to be gained from this one as they gear up for conference play starting in late December. Here are some takeaways from the win against Marquette.
