St. John’s Basketball falls to 0-2 in BIG EAST play once again after falling to Georgetown on the road in overtime, 97-94

Coming into Sunday, BIG EAST basketball fans across the country knew that the 117th meeting between Georgetown and St. John’s Basketball was going to be quite a different contest.

Besides COVID-19 changing the landscape of college basketball in 2020, tonight’s game at McDonough Gymnasium was the first time the two teams met on campus for a regular-season game in 40 years.

Both teams were searching for their first BIG EAST win of the season after falling in their first conference games of the year this past Friday.

St. John’s (5-3, 0-2 BIG EAST) and Georgetown (3-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) played back and forth basketball for much of the first half, despite the Red Storm shooting only 38% from the field. Posh Alexander and Julian Champagnie combined for 18 of St. John’s 40 points in the first half and Marcellus Earlington added seven points from the bench.

St. John’s started the second half on fire, opening the period on a 15-4 run to take a 55-46 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Georgetown would tie the game at 60 points apiece behind a T.J. Berger three-pointer at the 10:57 mark.

The Johnnies found themselves down 73-70 with six minutes left in the game. The Red Storm would climb back to a seven-point, 82-75 advantage with 2:37 remaining behind a scoring charge led by Isaih Moore, Greg Williams Jr., and Champagnie.

Georgetown responded with a 13-5 run, including a miraculous layup made by Donald Carey to take the 88-86 lead with six ticks left in regulation.

Williams Jr. sent the game into overtime after scoring from inside the paint with .9 seconds left off an inbound dish from Alexander.

In overtime, the Red Storm led for most of the period, but 93-92 was the last lead they would control as the Hoyas closed the game on a 7-1 run to win the contest by three points.

St. John’s is off to another 0-2 start in BIG EAST play and with that said, here are my three takeaways from Sunday night’s matchup.
