MEAC Basketball: Early observations and takeaways of 2020-21 season
Upcoming games to watch
As the MEAC conference schedule gets started in earnest, COVID-19 has changed how we’re going to actually see the bulk of the MEAC schedule play out. Back-to-back games are going to be the norm when the conference season actually starts. Cancellations have become the new reality, and the MEAC isn’t exempt from the trend. Even with that being the case, here are some upcoming MEAC games, at a glance, that really stand out:
Norfolk State vs. UNC-Wilmington – 12/18/20
The Spartans have another opportunity to carve another CAA notch on their collective belts when they meet up with the Seahawks on home turf in Hampton Roads. Norfolk State has been formidable at home, so the Spartans have a real chance to continue their winning run of form.
Coppin State vs. Virginia Tech – 12/19/20
When all gears are clicking and the Eagles are hitting shots, they can be a handful to deal with. Ask the Blue Devils and UNCG how difficult the task was for them. Anthony Tarke and company have another chance to throw a scare into a Power 5 conference opponent.
Morgan vs. Norfolk State (back-to-back) – 1/9/21 and 1/10/21
The first really BIG match-up between two of the deepest and most talented teams in the conference. The outcome of that double-header is going to say a lot about where the road to the MEAC title is going to go through.
Howard vs. Hampton – 12/18/20
The Bison have a prime opportunity to jumpstart their season in their tilt with rivals and Big South member Hampton University. questions still abound on the status of Makur Maker, Wayne Bristol Jr., and Purdue transfer Nojel Eastern in terms of their eventual roster availability, but HU still has a good deal of young talent to bring to bear in this match-up.
Freshman forwards Steve Settle and Jordan Wood will need to continue their accelerated growth on the court as this young squad ultimately gels and solidifies their identity on the court.
In a season full of surprises and uncertainty, the MEAC is living up to its’ potential of being an extremely entertaining league to watch. The conference race begins in the twilight of 2020 and looks to take on a life all its own.
