Big 12 Basketball: 2020-21 power rankings heading into New Year
The last time we saw Oklahoma on the basketball court, they were an Austin Reaves putback off a free throw miss from upsetting Texas Tech on December 22. Although he came short in that matchup, Reaves has been a superstar so far, leading the Sooners in all three main categories at 15.9 ppg, 5.1 apg, and 5.7 apg.
Senior forward Brady Manek (14.6 ppg) has been doing work inside, while sophomore guard De’Vion Harmon (11.9 ppg) has improved on his scoring production, including making 48% from the field and 40% from the three-point line. There’s been solid support of offense from the rest of the rotation, with four others scoring at least 7.0 ppg.
The Sooners have only played three games of note, beating TCU and losing to both Texas Tech and Xavier by 22 points. The other four victories had impressive margins but not the impressive caliber of opponents. So any hopes of this team making the NCAA Tournament will depend on how they do in Big 12 play, starting with West Virginia this weekend.
Can Reaves be the best player on a team that can do damage in the Big 12? That will be answered shortly. But it’ll be on Harmon to provide Oklahoma with a third legit scorer on a consistent basis if they’ll be good enough to beat the top half of the conference. He had 17 points against the Red Raiders so he is capable of doing it.
