12. George Washington Colonials

  • 2020-21 record: 2-7 overall, 1-1 A-10
  • Previous ranking: 10th

There might not be a team that has gone through as much of a tumultuous post-holiday stretch as the Colonials have.  Jamion Christian’s squad began the season 1-6, picking up a win over Coppin State while losing to the likes of Hampton, Delaware, William & Mary, and Charlotte – all four coming by less than five points each.

After Christmas and before GW’s December 30th game at Fordham, the Colonials saw three players leave the program in the span of five days. Among those were Maceo Jack and Jameer Nelson Jr., two players who averaged over 20 minutes a game – and were fifth and fourth in scoring on the team, respectively.

Since then, the Colonials have embarked on a 1-1 start in A-10 play, demolishing Fordham on Wednesday before falling to Duquesne on Saturday, 75-63.  With Nelson gone, the team has turned into a three-man show, comprised of James Bishop (20.1 ppg), Jamison Battle (17.2 ppg), and Matt Moyer (10.2 ppg and 9.6 rpg) – but those three have been the only ones to consistently produce offensively in GW’s two A-10 games.

George Washington is average both offensively (33.9% on 3PT and 53.1% on 2PT, 151st and 80th, respectively) and defensively (33.5% on 3PT and 49.7% on 2PT, 188th and 162th, respectively) – meaning they should have enough to still hang around with a few A-10 teams.  They may have the manpower needed to scoop up wins over Fordham and Saint Joseph’s, among others – but pulling those off will be even harder now than it was just a week ago.

The Colonials will have another shot on Duquesne on Sunday, but may have their best opportunity for a win on Wednesday, hosting UMass.  After that is a brutal stretch of five games through mid-January, which includes the likes of St. Bonaventure, VCU, and Dayton.
