The second halves

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Those are the famous words that open Charles Dickens’ classic novel A Tale of Two Cities. Words that can be applied to a number of games both these teams have played this season as several games have been a tale of two halves.

In the spirit of the storyline that the game is never ‘over before the final buzzer’ for Creighton the prime example resorts back to the Marquette loss. In that game, Creighton entered the locker room with a 44-35 lead. After halftime, Creighton proceeded to surrender 54 points during the remaining 20 minutes.

In their two-point victory over Connecticut, the Bluejays scored 33 in both halves (thus eliminating their offense as the problem area), but they let the Huskies score eight more in the second half. For an example of how their offense has let them down, one must look to their two-point victory over Providence when the Bluejays scored thirteen fewer points in the second half.

The Pirates’ second-halves have lacked consistency when compared to the first half as well. Over the six games, the Pirates have had decided by ten points or less, they scored six less in the second half versus Louisville and five less than they did in the first half versus Providence. They upped their offensive production in the second have by 16 versus Penn State, seven versus St.John’s, and by two versus Marquette.

As the Pirates offense seemingly picks up in the second half and the Bluejays defense softens up in the second half, expect this game to be a Tale of Two Halves.
