Houston Cougars guard Caleb Mills has left and is in the NCAA Basketball transfer portal. Which programs are going to be after him the hardest?

When it came to the 2019 NCAA Basketball overall recruiting classes, the Houston Cougars were way off the radar, listed at No. 62 per 247sportsComposite. But it turned out that they had a hidden gem with Caleb Mills, a three-star guard prospect out of Swannanoa, North Carolina.

Even though he was ranked at No. 199, Mills turned out to be a star as a freshman. He averaged a team-leading 13.2 ppg in 22.5 mpg, despite mainly coming off the bench last season. The 6’3 guard was a consistent source of offense and made up one of the best backcourts in the nation.

There was plenty of hype for both Mills and Houston coming into this season, including the player being named Preseason AAC Player of the Year. Yet after playing only four games due to covid issues and injuries, Mills ended up not playing in the past couple of games, leaving the team due to personal reasons. It ended up being the last he was with the team, as Mills opted to enter the transfer portal.

For Houston, it’s a tough blow for sure, not having a double-digit scorer that can come off the bench and produce. But they still have multiple other quality guards that’ll keep them the favorites in the AAC.

For Mills, he’ll be looking for a new team to play for the 2021-22 season, assuming the new transfer rules comes into effect by then. Expect many power conference programs to come calling. Here are six to keep in mind for the upcoming weeks.
