West Virginia at Baylor: 2020-21 key storylines for Big 12 matchup
West Virginia’s turnovers
Yes, we all know that the Baylor Bears are very aggressive on the defensive end of the floor. They are almost top thirty in the nation while surrounding 62.4 points per game, they average over nine steals a game which places them in the top twenty in the nation. Yes, if you do not turn the ball over you have a better chance to beat Baylor. In a perfect world where everything is so easy, that is all one needs to know, but stories are supposed to be unknown. That is what grabs our attention.
The unknown in this story is if West Virginia is actually going to be able to not turn over the ball. There have been too many instances where the turnover number, was not the smallest number in their boxscore if you discount the jersey numbers.
In 6 of their 13 games, the Mountaineers have committed more turnovers than been accredited for assists. In five of their thirteen games, the Mountaineers have had more turnovers than free-throws made, although they did have an equal amount when they made twenty free-throws versus VCU.
The plot thickens because in six of Baylor’s ten games their opponents had more turnovers than free-throws attempted, not made, attempted, and for good measure, four times Baylor’s opponents committed turnovers more often than made a field-goal field. It is all part of the story.
