AAC Basketball: Houston still on top of latest power rankings
2. Wichita State Shockers
Jumping right to the top when the Shockers made the move from the Missouri Valley Conference, a few average years (by Wichita State standards) came as a bit of a surprise. The COVID-19 challenges have been tough for everyone but throw in some off-season controversy with an exodus of transfers and the resignation of Gregg Marshall and you’ve got a recipe for a disaster.
After allegations of player abuse came to light in the fall, the 13-year head coach resigned and left the program in unfamiliar territory. Probably not what the conference had in mind when they were looking at their national recognition, but interim head coach Isaac Brown has shown he is ready to put Wichita back on the map.
They have one of the conference’s top scorers in Tyson Etienne, and efficient role players shooting over 50% give a good explanation why they’re the second highest-scoring team in the conference. They might not quite be there yet but they are close.
