There’s nothing wrong with considering a retread hire and it seems to be a theme in recent years in the coaching carousel. We’ve seen coaches like Anthony Grant, John Pelphrey, and even Rick Pitino get back into collegiate coaching, why couldn’t the same be said for a guy like Hobbs?

Hobbs has spent the last five seasons helping Steve Pikiell build Rutgers into an actual contending basketball team. He formerly spent ten years as the head coach at George Washington, leading the Colonials to three NCAA Tournaments in the process. Hobbs also played and coached at Connecticut, and was part of the Huskies’ staff that won their first national championship in 1999, just a few years before he departed for George Washington.

When he returned to UConn as an assistant for the second time, it would have been easy for Hobbs to just disappear into the coaching limelight, even after relative success with the Colonials, Now, he’s played a major role in transforming Rutgers from a punching bag to a recently ranked Big Ten contender. Jumping to nearby Fordham wouldn’t be a drastic change, and I’m sure the Rams would invite the opportunity if Hobbs can replicate his success from George Washington.
