NCAA Basketball: Ranking state of Michigan programs midway in 2020-21 season
By Ryan Kay
One division one NCAA Basketball team in the state of Michigan was flourishing and ranked in the top five nationally before a two-week stoppage in play due to confirmed cases of the B.1.1.7 variant of COVID-19 within the athletic program but no cases have been found within the men’s basketball program.
Another program in the state began the season undefeated at 6-0 but faltered in their following three games and they now have their first game after being on a 20-day break between games. Another team in these rankings who is not playing well throughout the whole season has had six games thus far postponed and or canceled this season. Lastly, a third team in the state canceled multiple games due to various reasons and is now playing better after winning three of their last four games.
The methodology used for these power rankings includes the head to head contests between the seven schools, their Net and KenPom rankings, as well as their overall performances this season. Overall, the majority of teams competing this season from the state of Michigan have been struggling or have been wildly inconsistent, let’s take a look at the power rankings of the division one teams from the state of Michigan.
Record vs. state of Michigan D1 teams: 0-3 with losses on the road to Michigan State and Central Michigan and a home loss against Central Michigan as well.
Net rankings: 325
Ken Pom rankings: 264
They are ranked last in these power rankings because they are the only team to have not had one victory against an in-state division one team.
Record vs. state of Michigan D1 teams: 1-2 with a loss on the road to Michigan State and a loss at home against Detriot Mercy. The Broncos have a home win against Central Michigan as well.
Net rankings: 305
Ken Pom rankings: 286
Western Michigan is ahead of Eastern Michigan in these power rankings because the Broncos defeated Central Michigan by 15 points as the Eagles have lost two games to the Chippewas this season.
Record vs. state of Michigan D1 teams: 2-1 with a loss on the road to Western Michigan. Central Michigan has two wins, a home win against Eastern Michigan and a road win against the Eagles as well.
Net rankings: 285
Ken Pom rankings: 254
The reason they are placed ahead of Western Michigan in this power ranking even though they lost to the Broncos by double digits is that they have two more in-state division one victories and they are ranked higher in both of the rankings used in these power rankings.
