Current overview for Maryland Basketball

Maryland currently is sitting at 10-10 overall and 4-9 in conference play. This is kind of where everyone thought Maryland would be at this point in the season, so just on the surface, Maryland is where they are in the toughest conference in the country and that is near the bottom of the Big 10. Before we go into what has been good and what has been bad, let us answer some of the previous questions.

Morsell has lived up to the expectation of him being the leader of this team. Morsell has played with emotion and passion and Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon has asked him to be the defensive stopper and Morsell has guarded some of the toughest players in the Big 10 and Coach Turgeon has asked a lot of him on the defensive end and as Maryland knows, as the defense goes, the offense goes as well.

Ayala, had some big shoes to fill this year and for the most part, has done a good job of being the floor leader. This year he has made better decisions in terms of making the right decisions, making the right passes, and making the right reads as well. On the defensive end of the floor, Ayala has been a tough defensive force, which has helped in the overall scheme of things.

In terms of his shooting, Ayala has shown flashes of being a legitimate scoring threat, but he has not been as consistent as many hoped he would have been. There is no doubt Ayala is having a great junior campaign.

Wiggins has the potential to be a dominant scorer when his stroke is on, Wiggins is one the best shooters in the Country. He was supposed to be the big-time scoring threat that Maryland was needing this year in order to be successful. When Wiggins is on the floor, the opposing team must account for him, which for the most part teams have done.

Wiggins has had his moments, in which there were times that he could not miss, and then there were times that he just could not buy a bucket. Even though Wiggins has shown he can score, he still has not been as consistent as everyone had hoped. Defensively, Wiggins is still a force and plays defense the Maryland way.

Scott has definitely made great strides in his sophomore season, as he has improved his game in terms of his all-around game, as he has shown no effects of the dreaded sophomore slump. There have been times, where he has been the only one that was making any shots and leading the way. Although his point production has fallen off since the start of the season, there is no question that Scott has become a major scoring threat. Scott’s defensive game is still solid, as he has been asked to do more things this year than in his freshman season.

Hamilton and Smith have fit in very well into the Terp’s scheme of things, as they have put in some big-time buckets and have come up with very good defensive efforts. Both players knew going into the season it would be a challenge for them, as they were expected to give the Terp’s a little more size. Hamilton has shown that he can score and Smith has shown that he can down low and on the glass. So, both have been solid additions to this year’s team.
