Jared Dudley

This is the type of bizarre hire that would put the Eagles in the national spotlight ahead of next season, but it would very much be a “high-risk, unknown-reward” type of scenario.  It is just as much of a bizarre suggestion, and may not have much footing – but current Los Angeles Lakers player and BC alumnus Jared Dudley would be an extremely intriguing option moving forward.

One of the greatest players in Boston College history, Dudley suited up for the Eagles from 2003 to 2007, earning All-Big East First Team honors in 2004-05, All-ACC Second Team honors in 2005-06, and All-ACC First Team, All-American Second Team – and, most importantly, ACC Player of the Year – in 2006-07.  Dudley is sixth in program history in scoring (2,071 points), seventh in rebounding (936), and eighth in steals (176), and led the Eagles to a 98-35 record while there.

Since being drafted in the first round by the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007, Dudley has enjoyed a lengthy career in the NBA, contributing to seven different teams in his 15-year career.  Averaging 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds, Dudley has never necessarily been a star on the court – his best season was in 2011-12, when he averaged 12.7 points and 4.6 rebounds for Phoenix – but he has taken on more of a leadership role over time, particularly now in the tail-end of his career.

Dudley, most recently, collected his first-ever NBA title as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers last season – and is still under contract with the Lakers, having played in just six games this year.  The 35-year old just published a short, autobiographical e-book a few weeks ago, detailing the experience of the NBA bubble during the latter half of the 2019-20 season – and has taken on a presence in the media on Twitter while talking to schools and programs about staying positive and healthy in the midst of the pandemic.

Again, Dudley is decidedly the outlandish choice – but if the Eagles want to go for a hire that will make national headlines, then Dudley is the guy.  He is a Boston College legend, and has proven to be a leader at both the collegiate and professional level on and off the floor – and, at the very least, should warrant a bit of consideration in having some role on the sidelines.
