The Bulldogs are making a case for one of the most talented teams in recent memory. They’re 20-0 overall and have dominated top-10 teams and everyone else throughout the season. And Gonzaga has three potential All-Americans on the roster, including five-star freshman Jalen Suggs and sophomore big man Drew Timme.
Timme is averaging just under 20 ppg as has quickly developed into one of the best big men in the country. It’s not a surprise to anyone who has watched Gonzaga Basketball in the past decade, as they can rival both Duke and Kentucky in terms of sending bigs to the NBA. The efforts from the Bulldogs could be seen as even more impressive since they didn’t have five-star talent, to begin with.
Whether it’s transfers such as Brandon Clarke or Kyle Wiltjer or international players such as Domantas Sabonis and Rui Hachimura, the Bulldogs track record with development is up there with the best, and has to be something Boakye is interested in.
But if Gonzaga is the preferred option, then it would have to be for the 2022 class. Despite the great season, Timme’s draft status makes it a possibility that he returns for another year. There’s also a very strong chance that the program lands No. 1 overall recruit Chet Holmgren, a former teammate of Suggs. That, as well as top-60 class of 2021 commit Kaden Perry and freshman center Oumar Ballo, makes the frontcourt for 2021-22 even more crowded than Michigan State.
The question will be whether Boakye really wants to reclassify or not.
