Boise State
After San Diego State blitzed through the Mountain West last year, Utah State pulled the major upset in the MWC title game. This season, it’s not a one or two-horse race in the MWC. The Aztecs and Aggies are both talented and Colorado State has been solid for most of the year, but it’s Boise State who really stood out this week.
Boise State got a pair of wins against Utah State this week, two big games that will go a long way towards deciding the conference race and putting them in position for a potential at-large bid. Derrick Alston Jr. had 26 points on Wednesday and 23 on Friday as the Broncos picked up a pair of big-time home wins.
At one point winners of 13 straight this season, Boise State is now 18-4, and their 14-3 mark puts them at the top of the MWC. They’ve taken care of business, winning their last four at home and putting themselves in that great position, but the resume lacks a little bit. The Broncos do sit at 33rd in the NET and now have a pair of Q1 wins; though they’ll have their chance for more.
The Broncos will travel to San Diego State next week in a series that will go a long way to deciding the MWC regular-season champion. In addition, these will be a pair of teams that arguably deserve to make the NCAA Tournament regardless. If the Broncos can steal one or both of the games against the Aztecs, then they can almost put a rubber stamp on a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
