St. Bonaventure

In this whacky world of college basketball (where things seem to be upside downs at time), one constant that remains is that there are some pretty good mid-major programs. Specifically, we’ve seen some fantastic times rise out of the A-10 in recent years, establishing itself as the best mid-major conference. There’s no team dominating to the same level as last year’s Dayton team, but there is one team emerging as March nears.

St. Bonaventure got three big wins and clinched at least a share of the A-10 regular season this past week, making them more than a winner in our book. Jaren Holmes played magnificently all week, leading the Bonnies in all three wins and scoring 53 points. The Bonnies swept Davidson, winning at home on Sunday, on the road on Wednesday. On Friday they absolutely destroyed George Washington, winning by 47 points.

The Bonnies now sit at 13-3, with that 11-3 conference record clearly putting them on top of the A-10. They got a pair of wins over Davidson, who was right at the top of the league with them at the start of the week. As they only played two nonconference games, their resume isn’t as strong as it might be in a normal year, but they have picked up wins over VCU, Richmond, and knocked off Akron on a neutral court back in December.

St. Bonaventure still has a home date with Dayton before the A-10 Tournament begins. It’s hard to say they are safe to make the NCAA Tournament at this point, but they’ve got to be feeling as good as any team in this tough conference. You can excuse all three of the Bonnies’ losses (there’s no bad loss) and if they keep playing like they did this week, then they won’t be sweating on Selection Sunday.
