Big 12 Basketball: Did Kansas upset over Baylor shake the power rankings?
By Andrew Tineo
Previous Games: 66-74 loss to West Virginia, 76-72 win at. Iowa State
Next Games: at. Texas Tech, vs. Texas
The losing streak from the Horned Frogs and a Kansas State win has put TCU at ninth in the power rankings.
TCU shot well from the field and played better than over the past couple of weeks. After a good freshman season from Mike Miles, he had his worst game, since January 5 vs. Kansas. He shot 3-9 from the field and made one three-pointer.
Miles will be an All-Big 12 Freshman team, and if not for Cade Cunningham, would be a prime candidate for Freshman of the Year.
Jamie Dixon’s seat is starting to get warmer and warmer. A win against a quality team like West Virginia would give TCU an outside shot of a deep Big 12 tournament run and a chance at making the Tournament through the bubble. Instead, they would fall to 4-8 in conference play.
The Horned Frogs would bounce back with a gritty road win over Iowa State. Even with a second-half power struggle, TCU had a clutch senior step up and put the game on ice for TCU. senior RJ Nembhard connected on 11 of his last 19 points in the final seven minutes of the game. He was able to keep Iowa State at arm’s length and scored near the rim.
Nembhard made just one three-pointer. However, his final four free throws capped the game. Miles got back on track as well, having the most efficient game, with 19 points on 10 total shots. He also added six rebounds and five assists.
The final key from TCU was a ridiculous free throw rate as they made all of their 18 attempts.
Even with the significantly better record over Kansas State, they dropped a game to the Wildcats and have been sliding downward. With the next two games, TCU is expected to be the underdog in both of those games.
