As we gear up for what is expected to be another crazy year of March Madness, the Southland Basketball tournament is just about set to get underway. However, the field will look a little different this year, with former Cinderella team Stephen F. Austin sitting this tournament out due to their post-season ban. It’s now narrowed down to ten teams looking for a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in Indiana.

Southland is normally a very solid mid-major conference that features some well-known teams outside of SFA.  In what’s been nothing short of an odd season, the conference only featured four of its thirteen teams with a winning record, however, conference play was a whole different story.

As we turn the page on the regular season, it’s Nicholls who is riding a hot streak, winning their last seven games on the campaign, good enough to secure the #1 seed for the tournament. While they only lost two games in conference play those two games came against Sam Houston State, leading many to believe this could set the stage for the Championship on March 13th.

With that being said, the majority of the Southland’s contests were very competitive this season, which makes for a very exciting upcoming week. The tournament is set to take place in Katy, Texas with the opening round ready to kick off tonight at 5 PM.  Let’s go ahead and take a look at some of the key teams going into the tournament.
