Creighton vs Georgetown: 2021 Big East Tournament game preview, TV schedule
The Georgetown Hoyas have the chance to steal an NCAA Tournament bid in the Big East finals against Creighton.
TV schedule: Saturday, March 13, 6:30 pm ET. FOX
Arena: Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York
Coming into the Big East Tournament, there were three teams whose at-large resumes were in great shape (Villanova, Creighton, and UConn). There were a few others who needed to make to few secure (St. John’s, Xavier, and Seton Hall), while the rest, including Georgetown, needed to run the title to get the autobid.
The Hoyas started out the tournament with a 19-point win over the No. 9 Marquette but faced the No. 1 seed Villanova Wildcats the next day. In was a close game throughout, but head coach Patrick Ewing and Georgetown pulled off the 72-71 win thanks to a pair of late free throws. But the Cinderella run for the Hoyas didn’t end on Friday, beating Seton Hall 66-58. Jamorko Pickett had 19 points to lead the team, while freshman guard Dante Harris had 15 on 5/6 shooting.
The last opponent is arguably their toughest, considering the injury issues with Villanova. Creighton was the 2 seed in the Big East Tournament and its biggest issue involved head coach Greg McDermott off the court, suspended for inappropriate comments in the lockerroom. But as a team, they look to have that behind them. They defeated Butler in their opening round, before beating UConn in a slugfest on Friday. The final score was 59-56, led by 14 points and 12 rebounds from Damien Jefferson.
Although Georgetown will be the clear underdog in Madison Square Garden, they do already have a win over the Bluejays this season. It was 86-79 back in early February, led by 22 points from Jahvon Blair. Creighton won the other matchup later in the season but the first game showed that the Hoyas can win in Creighton’s style of play.
Bubble teams everywhere will be rooting for the Bluejays, as the Hoyas would “steal” a bid from one of them with a victory today. Playing four games in four days will be tiring and this could play into Creighton’s advantage. If they turn this into a shootout, Georgetown’s run will come crashing on Saturday night.
Prediction: Creighton 78, Georgetown 65
