2-seed Houston meets cinderella 5 seed Cincinnati in the AAC Championship game.
TV Schedule: Sunday, March 14th, 3:15 pm. ET. ESPN
Arena: Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas
It looked like it was clear from the start of the AAC tournament that we were going to get Wichita State and Houston in the AAC championship game. Well, Cincinnati had other plans.
After entering the conference tournament on a two-game losing streak which included 14 point loss to a horrid Vanderbilt team. The Bearcats have reeled off three straight wins including a thrilling one-point win over top-seeded Wichita State.
Cincinnati had a great defensive showing against the Shockers today. Wichita was held to 59 points while shooting only 40% from the field and committing 16 turnovers.
The Bearcats won today with a team effort on offense getting 10 points from Mason Madsen, nine points from Tari Eason, and nine points from Keith Williams. Two of these guys came off of Cincinnati’s bench as the 24 bench points the Bearcats got were huge in the win.
For Houston, them being in this game should be no surprise to anyone around the country. The Cougars not only have been the favorite in the AAC but a consistent top 10 team in the AP Poll all season.
Houston’s path to this game has not been easy either. They killed Tulane on Thursday but were given a run for their money against Memphis beating them by only two points.
The Cougars got a big performance from Quentin Grimes. He had 21 points, six rebounds, two assists, four steals, and one block on seven of fifteen shooting from the field. Justin Gorham and Marcus Sasser also added 14 and 15 points apiece.
These teams only played once in the regular season and it ended with Houston destroying Cinci. 90-52. The underlying storyline of this game is not only would the Bearcats be able to steal a bid to the NCAA Tournament with a win, but this is also the third straight time the Bearcats and the Cougars have met in the AAC Championship game. With both games ending in a Cincinnati win.
I think that Houston will win this game very comfortably. Cinci. beat Wichita after they barely beat South Florida the day before. Even today the Bearcats only scored 60 points. If they want even a chance to win this game they need to score a lot more than that. Houston has a lot more talent than Cinci. and I think they will beat them by a comfortable margin. Houston will finally break their losing streak to Cinci in the AAC championship game and win their first-ever AAC title.
