A couple of years ago, the UMass Minutemen got a major recruiting victory with the commitment of top-100 NCAA Basketball class of 2019 prospect Tre Mitchell. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, the 6’9 forward/center became the centerpiece for a very good class for a program looking to get towards the top of the Atlantic 10.

Mitchell certainly did his part, starting off his freshman campaign with 20 points against Northeastern in Game No. 3. The freshman became a star in the conference, scoring in double figures in 23 straight games to end the 2019-20 season. That included a 34-point performance against Rhode Island in the regular-season finale.

Mitchell ended up with Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors, producing 17.7 ppg and 7.2 rpg and even 37 made three-pointers. The All-Conference big man came back to the Minutemen this past season and put up roughly similar numbers as a sophomore, going for 18.8 ppg in 13 games played. Injuries and multiple pauses due to covid issues were an issue, but the team managed to finish in 5th place in the league standings.

Had everyone came back for UMass, there was a chance that next season, in a normal year, could have been special for the program in the Atlantic 10. However, Mitchell has decided not to be a part of that, entering the NCAA Basketball transfer portal.

There are already hundreds of players that have already entered the portal, including a ton of mid-major athletes. But Mitchell clearly is a power conference talent and will be courted as such, with a ton of teams likely to be aggressively targeting him.

But which ones are the best potential fit? Here are 10 that instantly come to mind.
