West Virginia Basketball’s Bob Huggins joins the “900-win club”
Success at West Virginia Basketball for Bob Huggins
On April 5, 2007, Bob Huggins announced his return to Morgantown to accept his 5th head coaching job and lead the West Virginia basketball program. Huggy and the Mountaineers won a Big East conference tournament title in 2010, made it to the final four that same season, and have made it to four Sweet 16s.
This year will be Huggins’ 10th NCAA tourney bid with WVU and the 25th of his career. Today’s 900th win marks his 310th as a head coach at West Virginia.
Bob Huggins has done so much for the state of West Virginia and the University in his 14 years as head coach of the Mountaineers. You can tell he’s a good guy and a pleasure to be around unless it’s on a basketball court.
He’s been on the ballot for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame for the last four years and it was recently announced that he would not be inducted this year. Many are arguing he should’ve been inducted this year
I think he’ll be inducted next year or maybe the following year at the latest because they can’t wait much longer. He may not have the national championships that some of the other coaches in the 900 club have, but he still has success with multiple programs and did so the hard way, without 5-star recruits and other talent that top programs get.
Bob Huggins and his West Virginia team have been known throughout the country for their full-court press. However lately Huggins has reinvented his program. The Mountaineers are still playing aggressive, heavy effort defense but no longer incorporating the full-court press into the game plan.
The focus of this year has been offense and it has resulted in this Mountaineer squad becoming one of the best shooting teams in school history. In addition to the difference Huggins has made in multiple programs and the effort he gets out of his players, here’s his overall resume. It’ll be tough to say this doesn’t resemble that of a resume for a hall of fame coach.
