UNC Basketball: 12 candidates to succeed Roy Williams as head coach
By Joey Loose
Brad Stevens
North Carolina is hands down one of the best coaching positions in the entirety of college basketball. There’s no question that dozens of coaches would give anything to one day end up helming the Tar Heels program. For the Carolina brass, it’s important to explore all options when hunting for the next head coach, so why not leave all stones unturned?
Stevens rose to fame for his success at Butler, spending six years as an assistant to Todd Lickliter before taking over as head coach in 2007. He led those Bulldogs to shocking runs to the national championship game in both 2010 and 2011, greatly elevating the Butler program to heights previously unseen. Stevens became the head coach of the Boston Celtics in 2013 and has slowly built a solid Eastern Conference program over the years.
After declining Indiana just a week ago, is Stevens ever heading back to the collegiate game? The Celtics have been struggling recently, but does that mean Stevens really wants to head for the exits? That being said, the North Carolina job is one of those few jobs that is certainly attractive, even to a coach like Stevens. He could become even more of a legend spending the last few decades of his career in Chapel Hill; but would he make the jump?
