UNC Basketball: 12 candidates to succeed Roy Williams as head coach
By Joey Loose
Mark Few
It’s reasonable to consider every single possibility, especially when a big job like Carolina opens up. Some of the names that fans call for while be great contenders, while others will be beyond their wildest dreams. After the success he’s created on the West Coast, Few seems just a tad unrealistic, but still worthy to mention.
Few is the ultimate example of building a program and sticking with it for the long haul. After graduating from Oregon, he took an assistant coaching job at Gonzaga, serving on staff as the program became a Cinderella program. After mentor Dan Monson departed for Minnesota, Few took over the Bulldogs in 1999 and the rest is history. He’s now lead them to a pair of Final Fours, has brought incredible talent to Spokane, and has built a Blue Blood-quality program in a mid-major conference.
In his first Final Four trip, Few’s Bulldogs fell to North Carolina in the national championship game, culminating in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. It would be pretty wild to see Few depart for the Tar Heels, though it’s easy to see why he’d stay in Spokane. This year’s Bulldogs sit unbeaten and have an incredible shot to win the national championship. Few is already a legend in college basketball and has his chance to grab a couple of rings with the Bulldogs; why tamper with fate, even if Carolina came calling?
