Texas Tech Basketball: 9 candidates to replace Chris Beard as head coach
By Joey Loose
Why Texas Tech basketball could hireMark Turgeon
Our last candidate for the Texas Tech job is another more high-profile coach and someone with plenty of power conference coaching experience. Additionally, it’s someone who’s won games at the highest stage and has achieved great success in the state of Texas. Turgeon might be eager to move on from Maryland and the Texas Tech job could certainly pull him closer to his roots.
A native of Kansas, Turgeon played his college ball with the Jayhawks under Larry Brown before beginning his coaching career assisting Brown and later Roy Williams. His head coaching career has seen him achieve success at Jacksonville State and Wichita State. In the Big 12, he took Texas A&M to the NCAA Tournament in each of his four seasons before landing at Maryland. The last decade has seen the Terrapins do great things under Turgeon’s leadership, especially in a tough Big Ten.
The last 23 seasons as a head coach have been full of positive moments, but is Turgeon ready to depart Maryland and return to the Big 12? He proved success with the Aggies over a decade ago, but is this the right move for the school or Turgeon? There’s no doubt that Turgeon’s a winner, but there may be some more affordable and intriguing candidates on the list; consider that Chris Beard was a way better hire than Tubby Smith.
We’ve taken a close look at nine candidates to replace Chris Beard at Texas Tech; but who do you think is going to be the next leader of the Red Raiders program?
