Why Texas Tech basketball could hire Grant McCasland

If we take a look at the candidates for the Texas Tech opening, there are a few strong points for each candidate. McCasland comes forth as one of the best candidates, seeing as how he’s been a great head coach, has experience in the Big 12, has plenty of experience in Texas, and is a rising star in the coaching world based on recent events.

After playing his college ball at Baylor, McCasland’s career began on the Texas Tech staff under James Dickey. He’s had success as a junior college head coach before spending five years on Scott Drew’s coaching staff at Baylor. After briefly serving as Arkansas State’s head coach, McCasland has done fantastic work in four seasons at North Texas, including an upset win over 4-seed Purdue in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

McCasland is an impressive candidate for Texas Tech and a slew of other potential openings. His recent success in the NCAA Tournament and his prior experience with the Red Raiders certainly elevate his candidacy. This former Big 12 assistant is ready for a new challenge and could do some pretty impressive work helming his own Big 12 program.

One bizarre potential concern is that McCasland could depart for Baylor one day; though surely the Red Raiders couldn’t lose two straight coaches to conference rivals?
