Maryland, VCU and NC State in play for Georgetown transfer Qudus Wahab
VCU Rams
It was a very unfortunate end of the season for the Rams, having to leave the NCAA Tournament due to covid issues. On the bright side, they’ll return Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Nah’Shon Hyland and three other leading scorers for the upcoming season. They do (for now) will lose starting senior forwards Corey Douglas and Levi Stockard, while 7’1 center Brendan Medley-Bacon has transferred out.
That leaves no one on the current roster taller than 6’9, which isn’t a big deal in the A-10 but could be problematic when taking on larger power conference opponents in the non-conference and NCAA Tournament. Wahab would be an absolutely great fit and he could dominate the conference, putting up conference of the year numbers himself. And with VCU being close to home as well, this would be a great option for the big man.
West Virginia Mountaineers
Once starting center Oscar Tshiebwe transferred out during the season, the Mountaineers defense took a major step back which haunted them in the Round of 32 loss to Syracuse. If they’re trying to land Wahab, it would send a message that the team wants to have a true defensive anchor at the five-spot.
Assuming Derek Culver comes back for another season, he and Wahab could play together a bit in the frontcourt but this would also give West Virginia a good big man to play at the center position for all 40 minutes, with these two taking turns.
There’s next to no depth in the frontcourt assuming Gabriel Osabuohien departs so the Mountaineers will have to land at least one big man in the transfer portal. Is Wahab the answer? Who knows. But he’s one of the best available centers so it’s certainly worth a try.
